Shout out for German Week competition

During "Shout out for German Week", Year 7 got creative to decode compound nouns -  two of their favourites were "Faultier" ( lazy animal - a sloth) and "Stinktier" (stink animal - a skunk).

Year 9 German Event - ‘Further with Languages: What is your Languages Story?’ - January 2026

We were delighted to welcome Dr Charlotte Ryland and her team at the Queen's College Translation Exchange, based at the University of Oxford, in partnership with the Stephen Spender Trust. The event explored how learning languages can provide unique opportunities for working across cultures and towards a range of rewarding careers.

In the afternoon, our Year 9 German students were joined by students from Chosen Hill School and Denmark Road High School for Girls to take part in workshops in creative translation from German. After school, we were joined by parents and carers for a presentation on the value of language learning today and a discussion centred around the question: ‘What is your languages story?’.

During this session, we heard from graduates and undergraduates from the University of Oxford who talked about how they had started their languages story, the skills they had developed along the way and how languages had shaped their study and future careers. It was really exciting to be part of such a buzz for languages and share this wealth of language knowledge and experiences.

Thank you to Dr Charlotte Ryland and her team for delivering such an inspiring and enjoyable event.

It was a perfect way to celebrate "Shout out for German" week.

A-level Initial Teacher Training Day - January 2026

We were delighted to welcome MFL trainees from Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership (GITEP) to spend the day focussing on A level teaching.

They observed Year 12 and Year 13 lessons in the morning and then we discussed key elements of A-level teaching, as well as sharing lots of ideas for lessons. It is always fulfilling to work with new trainees and share their enthusiasm and excitement.

We wish them every success in their course and teaching careers.

Exploring the intercultural dimension - November 2025

During this first online webinar "Exploring the intercultural dimension in the MFL classroom and the wider school community", Lorna Blacklock, Dr Ewa Hearfield and Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp shared lots of practical ideas to bring culture into lessons and showcased the variety of languages in our schools. We really took a deep dive into how to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity within our schools. Through the webinar we looked at:

  • Celebrating cultural and linguistic diversity within our schools

  • The Language Leader Award

  • Deepening cultural understanding through creative translation - using songs, poems and stories to bring the target language culture to life
